BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

 

     On this trip we will visit the town of Trebinje and ancient monastery Tvrdoš. Trebinje is one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, economic and cultural center of Eastern Herzegovina.

    We set off in the direction of the Kotor Bay, which cross the ferry, drive along the shore of the bay and take the exit Montenegrin-Bosnian border. Familiarity with Bosnia and Herzegovina we will start with a visit to an Orthodox church of the Annunciation (often called Hertsegovachka Gracanica), which is located on the hill Crkvina, towering over Trebinje. This temple was built in honor of Jovan Duchicha (1871-1943) - Serbian poet and diplomat, born in Trebinje. He did not die in his homeland, but bequeathed to bury him in Trebinje. His tomb is in the church, and in the City Park  the monument to him is built.

     Furthermore, our path lies in the center of Trebinje. Its history dates back to antiquity. The name itself - "Trebinje" comes from the Greek Terbounia - the ancient name of the area on the Adriatic coast from Kotor to Dubrovnik, which included the present city and its surrounding mountains. You will have walking tour through the old part of the city. We will see the Museum Herzegovina (which we can visit in your free time), the Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, Osman Pasha Mosque (XVIII c.), the famous bridge Arslanagicha (XVI c.). We continue our trip to the legendary Orthodox monastery Tvrdoš.

     Tvrdoš monastery is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and built on the rocks on the right bank of the river Trebišnjica, 4 kilometers from Trebinje. There is a legend which says that the monastery was built by Emperor Constantine the Great and his mother Helena in the IV. Monastery Tvrdoš known fact that there was tonsured a prominent Serbian Orthodox ascetic Basil of Ostrog. The monks of the monastery to this day retain the Serbian tradition of winemaking. In the old stone basement of the XV century in oak barrels legendary wine "Vranac" matures . All guests of the monastery can taste and buy wine . After visiting the monastery  our journey ends and we go back to Montenegro
